Open Access

Open Access Publishing

Free, immediate, online access to research — accelerating discovery worldwide.

Our Commitment to Open Access

Open Access (OA) publishing removes barriers to research, enabling anyone, anywhere to read and build upon the latest scientific discoveries. We strongly support the global transition to open access and work with publishers and researchers to make high-quality research freely available.

What Is Open Access?

Open Access refers to research outputs — articles, data, reports — that are freely available online without subscription fees or paywalls. Open Access research can be read, shared, and reused under clearly defined licensing terms.

Types of Open Access

  • Gold OA: Articles published immediately as open access in the journal. Authors typically pay an article processing charge (APC).
  • Diamond OA: Fully open access with no costs to authors or readers — funded by institutions or grants.
  • Hybrid OA: Subscription journals that offer individual articles as open access upon payment of an APC.
  • Green OA: Authors self-archive accepted manuscripts in repositories.

Benefits of Open Access

Open access accelerates scientific discovery, increases citation impact, and ensures research funded by public money is publicly accessible. It is particularly important for researchers in low- and middle-income countries.
